Application of Molybdenum Foil in Aluminum Ion Battery

Molybdenum foil is a kind of thin sheet made of transition metal molybdenum material, which has the characteristics of high purity, low resistance, good electrochemical performance and chemical stability. Therefore, it can be used as a fluid collector in aluminum ion batteries, which can solve the current problem of the current battery.

Aluminum ion battery is a rechargeable battery composed of negatively charged aluminum anode, positively charged graphite cathode, diaphragm and electrolyte, which has similar functions to lithium ion battery. With the advantages of rich and easily available aluminum resources, the use of non-flammable and electrochemically stable electrolyte, and the high theoretical specific capacity of aluminum metal anode, it is highly concerned by the majority of energy storage researchers.

However, the development of aluminum ion batteries also faces many problems, such as the problem of fluid collection, the problem of aluminum anode corrosion and the high cost of electrolyte. Among them, most of the current collectors with good performance are molybdenum foil and tantalum foil with inert characteristics and stable performance within the corresponding voltage range of the electrolyte system, but these metals are rare metals and relatively expensive. Note: The current collector refers to the structure or part that collects the current and can output the collected large current.

Compared with the cheap metal nickel foil and titanium foil, the application of molybdenum foil in aluminum ion battery has better electrochemical performance and chemical stability, so it can better ensure the stable operation of the battery. The research shows that nickel foil will have chemical corrosion in the aluminum ion battery system, and will have adverse side reactions at low potential, with a narrow range of withstand voltage.

It is worth mentioning that in addition to molybdenum foil, tantalum foil, nickel foil and titanium foil, tungsten foil can also be used as a fluid collector for batteries. The results show that tungsten foil has stable electrochemical performance in the range of 0-2.5v voltage window.
