Fishing by tungsten jigs |
Fishing continues to be spotty. The water on top of the ice has firmed up after the weekend rain, but it is very slick.
Bluegill fishing continues to be spotty. Anglers willing to "hole-hop" using electronics to find fish have done best. Look for the gills around weeds in 6 to 12 feet. On some lakes, the bluegills were found as deep as 25 feet, with the fish being tight to the bottom. With the bluegills being finicky, Nos. 14-16-Ratfinkee, Gill Pill, Marmooksa, Moon Glitter or teardrop ice jigs will work best. For gills in deep water, use tungsten jigs such as Fiskas or Skandia's. Wax worms, spikes, mousies and wigglers work best for live bait. Plastic wedgie tails placed on a bare hook or 1/100th-ounce jig also work well. Red or purple are the two best colors.
Crappies were found suspended over deep water or above the tops of weeds. Early morning and night are the best times to target crappies. "Dead-sticking" a small fathead, lake shiner or rosy red minnow on a No. 14 or No. 16 treble hook has worked best. A rocker, Ratfinkee or 1/80th-ounce jig tipped with a waxworm, wiggler or plastic has also produced. Small jigging spoons work great for aggressive crappies.
Anglers fishing for perch have done best using tip-ups. Rig your tip-ups with a 4-pound test fluorocarbon leader and a No. 14 treble hook. Small golden shiners or large lake shiners work best. It is a good idea to drill a hole next to your tip-up so you can jig if a school comes through.
Northern pike action has picked up. Set your tip-ups around shallower weed flats for the most action. Don't overlook deeper structure, especially for bigger pike. Rig your tip-ups with a heavy fluorocarbon leader and a No. 6 or No. 4 red treble hook. Medium to jumbo golden shiners or medium suckers work best. "Brined" jumbo smelt on a two-hook smelt rig also have worked.
Walleye action has been hit or miss. The best time to target them is during low-light hours. Look for them around structure in 12 to 20 feet, but you may have to fish as deep as 30 feet. Tip-ups were the preferred method for most walleye anglers. Rig your tip-ups with an 8-pound fluorocarbon leader, a small red or glow bead, and a No. 10 or No. 12 red treble hook. Small or medium golden shiners, large lake shiners or small suckers will work best for bait. The walleye anglers had the best success jigging with Jigging Rapalas, Swedish Pimples or Buck Shot spoons tipped with a piece of minnow.
