Brief introduction to Metal Injection Method (MIM) for Tungsten Heavy Alloy (WHA)
Metal Powder Injection Molding (MIM) was developed from 1973 by Mr. Weich and his colleagues of Parmatech. MIM technology is well suited for the manufacture of relatively small, complex components requiring high strength and cost viability. MIM technology takes advantage of unique process capabilities, such as combining components into one complex geometry or co-molding and bonding dissimilar materials.
MIM is not arrestive at all at the beginning. Since 1979,Their product which was made by MIM technology won 2 design awards at International powder metallurgy convention, this technology is regarded highly. At the beginning of 1980, many Europe countries and Japan devote to R & D on MIM and generalize it rapidly. Specially in the middle of 1980, MIM was advanced much more rapidly since its industrialization, and developed at egregious speed every year. Until this time, more than 300 companies from over 10 countries and areas are engaged on MIM product research, development and sales.
Japan is so active and more than 40 companies specialize on MIM. Its sales turnover already exceeded Europe's and very closes with USA? From 1990s, some companies and persons in China began to engage on MIM. Until this time
For unique characteristic of MIM technology, MIM is suitable to manufacture the metal and ceramic component with the property of complex three-dimensional structure, high density, high rigidity, high precision, etc.. The smaller, more precise, more complex, MIM have more advantage, the density comes 95%-98%.
1. The characteristics of MIM
A) The component made by MIM has more free geometry structure, with symmetrical density within the component, precise dimension. MIM is suitable to produce complex structure, precise small component with special requirement. (weight 0.08-200g/pc);
B) MIM is suitable to produce the component made from extra rigid or extra-fragile or un-cuttable material. Or for the component which can be foundry but segregation or pollution happen during process. It can lower the cost greatly.
C) The component made by MIM has stable quality, reliable performance, with the relative density of 95% and 98%. It can be treated like cementite, quenching, temper, etc..
D) Typical tolerance is 0.006mm/mm, and 0.004mm/mm within the batch and 0.002mm/mm after 2nd time machine.
E) MIM has short process, high efficiency and is apt to achieve mass production.
